A few thoughts for my fellow professionals—especially those at Microsoft and others—who have recently been impacted by layoffs. I want to share my own experience getting laid off from Amazon back in 2023, in hopes that it brings some comfort, perspective, and resilience to anyone facing the same storm.

When the Dream Suddenly Ends

Amazon was a dream company for me. I had worked hard to land that job, and even harder to adjust, learn, and deliver. Within a year, I had already contributed to key projects. I felt proud, motivated, and hopeful.

During that period, Amazon had already gone through two rounds of layoffs. Naturally, I was concerned. In every one-on-one, every open meeting, I asked our leadership—“Are we at risk?” The answer was always reassuring. “You’re in one of the safest teams in AWS. This team would be the last to get hit.”

I believed them.

Until one morning around 9 AM. I was at my daughter’s doctor’s appointment when I saw an email land in my personal inbox. It was from Amazon. I realized I couldn’t log in to my work laptop anymore. Access revoked. Teams disabled. In just a few hours, I was out.

❝ Sometimes, the biggest shocks come not from the unknown, but from what we were told was safe. ❞

If you’ve just gone through a layoff, I know exactly how it feels.

It’s Not Your Fault

Let me say this clearly: do not blame yourself.

You could be a top performer. You could be loyal, consistent, and highly skilled. It often has nothing to do with any of that.

This is about metrics and margins. This is about decisions made in boardrooms, far removed from your contributions. In many cases, it's not even about how much profit companies make—it’s about how much more they could save, how much higher their stock price could climb. It’s about the cold machinery of corporate economics. And unfortunately, that machinery doesn’t stop to consider your loyalty or performance.

It hurts. But it’s not on you.

What Helped Me Get Through It

What helped me stay grounded during that time was something I had internalized many years earlier.

In my very first job, I watched a respected co-worker get terminated with just 30 minutes' notice, despite serving the company for over two years with a good reputation. I was shocked. But I also learned something powerful:

Every time I walked into the office afterward, I reminded myself of the Exit sign hanging above the emergency door:

• Take care of yourself. Breathe. Walk. Sleep. Talk. Don’t try to “grind” through it.

• Believe in your journey. If you’ve overcome things before—and you have—this too shall pass.

1. Solidify Your Foundations

1.1 Linux and OS Fundamentals

• Deepen your understanding of Linux: file system hierarchy, permissions, basic commands, system performance monitoring, process management, and networking.

• Programming & Scripting: Develop in-depth knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (Python or Go) for more complex automation and building robust tools. Additionally, stay comfortable with scripting languages like Bash or PowerShell for day-to-day SysAdmin/DevOps chores. Having strong expertise in one primary language, plus familiarity with others, will take you a long way on this journey.

1.2 Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)

• Core concepts: Requirements gathering, development, testing, deployment, maintenance. Having an in-depth understanding and practical experience of the entire software development cycle is crucial—whether or not you can personally execute every phase. Coming from industry, you’re expected to have a solid grasp of each stage in the process.

• Agile and DevOps: Understand the Agile workflow (Scrum/Kanban), continuous integration, continuous deployment, and the feedback loop. As Amazon’s definition of SysDev suggests, you’ll also be expected to maintain operational excellence—troubleshooting issues quickly and putting out fires when needed. This means building robust systems, responding effectively under pressure, and continually improving processes to minimize downtime.

1.3 Cloud Knowledge

The vast majority of Amazon infrastructure is built on AWS, so having strong AWS knowledge is a significant advantage. The more cloud knowledge you have, the better you’ll perform, and the smoother your journey will be—especially for demonstrating expertise in distributed systems. If you prefer Azure or GCP, that’s also beneficial, but AWS is typically recommended for roles at Amazon. Keep in mind that AWS is not strictly required; however, it can streamline your overall preparation for your desired role.

2. AWS Certifications & Advanced Cloud Skills

2.1 AWS Associate-Level Certifications

Completing two AWS Associate-level certifications is a great way to solidify core services knowledge and demonstrate competence. The certification process helps you thoroughly learn AWS’s core services, ensures familiarity with building inside AWS, and can provide greater visibility—both internally and externally—as proof of your strong AWS foundation. If you prefer Azure or any other cloud, that’s still beneficial. Amazon (and most top tech companies) do not look solely for specific technology knowledge, but rather the capacity to adapt to new platforms and continuously learn. A strong base as a builder who can adapt as situations demand is crucial.

Suggested certs:

1. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate

   • Focus: Designing resilient, cost-efficient, fault-tolerant, and scalable systems.

   • Emphasis on architecture best practices and fundamental services (EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, etc.).

2. AWS Certified Developer – Associate (or AWS SysOps Administrator – Associate)

   • Developer Associate: Focus on development, deployment, and debugging in the cloud environment.

   • SysOps Administrator: Focus on deployment, management, and operations in AWS.

3. AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (Optional)

   • If you’re willing to go the extra mile, this certification can deepen your DevOps expertise and firmly establish your credibility in the field.

2.2 Hands-on Cloud Projects

• Project ideas:

  • Deploy a web application (Python/Node.js) using a CI/CD pipeline in AWS.

  • Automate infrastructure provisioning with AWS CloudFormation or Terraform.

  • Implement monitoring and logging solutions using CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and third-party tools (Datadog, Splunk, etc.).

3. Programming & Automation Skills

3.1 Python as a Primary Language

• Core Python: Data structures (lists, dictionaries, sets, tuples), OOP, error handling, file operations, threading, etc.

• Automation Scripts: Write Python scripts to handle repetitive tasks. Example: an AWS resource cleanup script, an auto-scaling configuration script, or a custom log parser.

• API & Libraries: Familiarize yourself with the requests library for APIs, Boto3 for AWS automation, and relevant DevOps tooling libraries.

3.2 Building Real-World Automation Projects

• CI/CD: Integrate GitHub/GitLab, Jenkins/GitHub Actions for builds and deployments.

• Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Use Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Ansible to provision and manage infrastructure programmatically.

• Monitoring & Alerting: Automate the setup of dashboards/alerting for important metrics (CPU usage, memory usage, container statuses).

4. Advanced Topics & Project Experience

4.1 Large-Scale Projects

• Why Large-Scale?: Amazon often looks for candidates who can demonstrate experience dealing with complexity, scale, and resilience.

• Project Types:

  1. Microservices Architecture: Break a monolithic application into microservices orchestrated with containers (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS/EKS).

  2. Serverless Applications: Build an event-driven pipeline with AWS Lambda, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB to practice serverless concepts.

4. Penetration Tester (Ethical Hacker): Penetration testers are "white hat" hackers who test the effectiveness of an organization's cybersecurity measures. They use techniques similar to malicious hackers but do so legally and ethically to identify vulnerabilities.

This blog post shall not be taken as guidelines. Instead, this is my way of thinking about a common interview question/topic, “Tell me about yourself.” Irrespective of any industry, it is the most commonly discussed topic on the interview board.

We need to understand that “Tell me about yourself” is a general interview topic, not an interview question. The word “QUESTION” is always fearful to many of us. So the first step is to consider this not a question and offload some of our pressure.

Think about meeting an unknown person in your personal life for any individual or business reason. We start the discussion by asking a few common questions like,

How was the traffic? Did you take a drive or take a bus or subway? How did the weather look like in your area?

We had a little shower in this area. Often we tell them as an ice breaker. You may have noticed that you wait to start the original discussion immediately after you meet. You are allowing him to settle and be comfortable. You may ask him how is your work or project going. (Which might be your main point of interest). In this case, you are not directly asking that person about his work. You are allowing him to start a conversation about the type of work he does. As a professional individual, he shall take this as a lead to start the discussion and allow you to know more about his type of work, at least at a high level, to get a clear overview of his nature of work.

Behind the simple request, 'Tell me about yourself’, lies a chance to share your passions, accomplishments, and aspirations, revealing the incredible tapestry of your journey.

Let’s return to the “Tell Me About Yourself” topic from the job interview perspective.

When we are in an interview room, we all are unknown to each other. So we need an ice breaker like any regular conversation, which starts with asking about the weather, time zone, and any breaking news of that day. Although these are icebreakers, one must respond spontaneously. “Tell me about yourself/ Tell me what you are doing currently/How is the project looking?” shall follow after the icebreaker question. I would take this question as a part of ice breaking, in other words, as a general conversation, not an interview question.

When one can distinguish between questions and general discussion, which reduces some pressure and allows our brains to think appropriately, remember the earlier conversation with an unknown person!!!

In an interview, our common interest is to assess each other. The interviewer will evaluate the interviewee and interviewee to evaluate the company and its culture through the interviewer. The “tell me about yourself” question allows you to describe what you are doing in the context of your current job and your qualifications aligned with the job you are interviewing for. Your explanation shall not be full of too low-level information. Still, it shall describe your recent work and skillsets in a very organized and understandable manner so that everyone on the interview board understands your experience and capacity to work. A conversational statement that makes everyone feel comfortable also grows interested in listening and asking questions about your experiences and expertise. When we talk about ourselves, we shall focus on our strengths and good things, making us passionate about our tasks.

It would greatly help to implicitly concentrate on how your current ability may help your interviewing company. You do not want to talk about something entirely out of the interviewing company’s interest. That does not put value to the conversation either way.

“Tell me about yourself” is the gateway to the actual interview. An interviewer likes to take the lead out of your narration and ask for more details. Narrating something you do not know or do not have expertise in shall lead you toward trouble. It is acceptable to allow people to know your strength and weakness in your task while giving high-level descriptions.

No one can know everything. Every company is unique. As an interviewer, it is essential to see if you can demonstrate your ability, as mentioned in your paper resume, which does not reflect the real yourself until you perform on the interview board. In other words, you defend the context of your resume at a high level by narrating about yourself on an interview board.

Tell me about yourself or a topic that determines in which direction you would like to drive your interview. It is an open question/topic. You have much freedom to talk, and allow you to control the interview room environment. Through open-end questions like “Tell me about yourself,” you can initially influence the interviewer to ask questions about what you are good at or have expertise in. In many cases, this short discussion determines the fate of an interview. Remember interviewer has limited time, and they have questions to ask you. If you can direct them towards your strength through “Tell about yourself,” you allow them to spend some time within your comfort zone. Thus highly likely you end up with a positive outcome from the interview.

Make your strategy to narrate about yourself. You know yourself, your field, and your expertise more than anyone. Yet, although you may have great skill sets and the ability to perform your work, you may need help to pass the job interview hurdle. These might be due to a need for more soft skills in narrating your knowledge to the knowledgeable interview board.

For example, there are specific questions like rating yourself or your skills on a scale from 1-10 or your strengths and weaknesses. Some people place their skills by ten and mention that they have no flaws and are perfect in everything, or they do not make mistakes at work. However, the chances of being perfect in every skill are nearly impossible. So, by portraying yourself as an ideal candidate, you message hiring managers that you need more self-awareness and are open to growing and learning within the organization. So, it is better to answer such questions honestly and tell them about your areas of improvement and strengths. Exhibiting proficiency in self-evaluation and adeptly responding to feedback, demonstrates your ability to continually grow and improve.
